Moe the Mouse® Regional Adaptation Project

The BC Aboriginal Child care Society (BCACCS), in partnership with Anne Gardner and Margaret Chesterman, created the Moe the Mouse™ Speech and Language Development Program, an innovative program that aims to enhance language development in children ages 3-5. Since the initial launch in 2003, there has been an exponential growth in requests for the program within BC and across the country. Its popularity attests to the positive impact it is having within diverse Indigenous early learning and child care (IELCC) environments.

While the program was originally designed to be adaptable to the diverse cultural and linguistic needs of Indigenous children in BC, the Unifor Social Justice Fund (SJF) and Canadian National Railway Company (CN) have generously awarded BCACCS funding to adapt the program to the needs of Indigenous children in the regions of Quebec, Ontario, Saskatchewan, Alberta, Yukon, and the Atlantic Provinces.

BCACCS invited partners within each of these regions to collaborate on co-developing and co-implementing regional Moe the Mouse® Speech and Language Development Programs that integrate local Indigenous cultural content with the purpose of enhancing language development and improving overall outcomes for all Indigenous children

Moe the Mouse® in Community

The Manitoba First Nations Education Resource Centre (MFNERC) received permission to adapt Moe the Mouse® to be culturally relevant to the region. They adapted the curriculum and created their own version of the adventure book that is included in the Moe the Mouse® kit.
