The BC Aboriginal Child Care Society is pleased to
offer the following training workshops throughout BC.
The workshops are designed to help parents, volunteers, staff and
coordinators of early childhood education and care programs as well as Child Care Resource
and Referral Programs enhance their services for Aboriginal children
and families.

Please note:
- There should be at least 6 participants per workshop,
with a maximum of 20.
- All participants will receive a professional
development certificate that can be used toward ECE license
renewal.
- Costs for training
depend on the workshop length, location and topic. Some
facilitators will have to travel. Call us for an estimate.
- We offer daytime,
evening or weekend workshops to fit your schedule.
- Workshops
can be offered at your facility or ours.
- Child minding will
be provided by the host agency when arrangements are made 1 week in advance.
- Meals
will be provided by the host agency for workshops that go through lunch or dinner.

Ages and Stages Questionnaires
® (ASQ) Training (one or two days)
Description: The Ages & Stages Questionnaires® (ASQ) system is a low-cost, reliable assessment tool of infants and young children for developmental delays during the crucial first 5 years of life. The questionnaire covers five key developmental areas: communciation, gross motor, fine motor, problem solving, and personal-social. Participants will learn how to use the ASQ Training families in their program and learn the basic foundations of child development. Please note that participants must already have purcahsed the ASQ® from Brookes Publishing, which is available at http://www.brookespublishing.com/store/books/bricker-asq/index.htm

Ages and Stages Questionnaires: Social and Emotional® Training (one or two days)
Description: The Ages and Stages Questionnaires: Social and Emotional® (ASQ:SE) Training helps home visitors, educators, caregivers, parents and service providers to assess children's social and emotional development. Some developmental areas touched upon include: self-regulation, compliance, communication, adaptive functioning, autonomy, affect and interaction with people. Workshop participants will learn how to use the ASQ:SE with families in their program and learn more about children's social and emotional development.

Assessment, Evaluation, and Programming System for Infants and Children® Training (one or two days)
Description: The Assessment, Evaluation and Programming System for Infants and Children® (AEPS) is a comprehensive and linked system that includes assessment/evaluation, curricular and family participation components. The AEPS curriculum-based assessment/evaluation tool is desgined to be used by prgorams that have chosen an intervention model that links assessment, intervention and evaluation processes. Participants will learn how to use the AEPS for assessment, program planning and evaluation.

Effective Proposal Writing and Fundraising Strategies for Early Childhood Programs (one day)
Description: Participants will learn about needs assessments, funding sources and fundraising activities. Participants will develop their own funding proposal for local funding programs and foundations.

Designing Culturally Focused Early Childhood Curriculum (one day)
Description: Learn to develop and implement culturally focused curriculum and resources that draw upon local First Nations cultures. Locally developed curriculum relies on input from parents and community members and is accepted and used more meaningfully by caregivers and child care centres.

Program Management: Non-Profit Boards and Parent/Elder Advisory Committees (one day)
Description: What is a non-profit board? How is it managed? Are there different styles? Come learn the roles and responsibilities of a non-profit Board of Directors, Parent Advisory Committee, and Parent Elder Advisory Committee. Participants will review the roles and responsibilities of a chairperson and committee members, create a terms of refernce for a comitte and role-play a committee meeting.

Music and Movement (half or full day)
Description:A hands-on music and movement workshop designed to encance your program. We will explore rhythm, chants, movement/dance, songs and storytelling, in a fun and energetic atmosphere. Participants will develop a good understanding of the importance of music and movement in the development of the young child. A minimum of 15 participants required for this workshop.

Management Training & Team-Building (one or two days)
Description: In this participatory workshop, participants will learn about and discuss program management, motivation and leadership strategies for promoting team-work.

Caring for our Children: A Resource and Training Kit for Aboriginal Children's Programs (one to three days)
Description: This workshop introduces participants to Caring for our Children: A Resource and Training Kit for Aboriginal Children's Programs in British Columbia. Depending on the number of days chosen for this training, the workshop can focus on selected chapters of the Kit, focusing on discussion topics most relevant to the participants. Please contact the facilitator to customize the workshop to best fit your community's needs.

Making the Most of Moe (one day)
Description: This workshop, developed and owned by Anne Gardner and Margaret Chesterman, the 2 Speech Language Pathologists who developed the Moe the Mouse™ Curriculum Box for BC ACCS, teaches educators and parents how to use the Curruiculum Box. The workshop also discusses the basics of speech and language development in young children, strategies for supporting children's speech and language development and strategies for supporting children with speech and language delays in childcare, preschool, and home settings.

Best Practices in Aboriginal Early Childhood Programs (one or two days)
Description: This workshop will focus on the ACCS Publication "Handbook of Best Practices in Early Childhood Programs, 2003." Topics to be discussed include implementing culturally focused curriculum, teaching traditional languages, networking, program policies and procedures, program evaluation and children's assessments. Participants should bring examples of program resources and materials for sharing. Please note that the Handbook is undergoing revision.

Asset Mapping to Build a FASD Prevention, Intervention and Support Program (one and a half days)
Description:
Module One: Building Healthy Communities for Children and Families
Affected by FASD will provide basic information on FASD and the
development of a Healthy Community approach to FASD. In this unit
participants will develop the following: a basic understanding of
FASD, an understanding of the complexities of supporting families
affected by FASD and some ways that communities can help reduce
the impact of FASD in children and families.
Module Two: Using the Asset Mapping Tool to Build a Community
Response to FASD will provide participants with information about
the Asset Mapping approach to community planning. In this unit
participants will develop the following: some understanding of
ways that community-based programs can collaborate in planning for
persons affected by FASD, a working knowledge of the Asset Mapping
Tool as a method of building community-based plans.
Module Three: Developing Goals and Measuring Success within an
Asset Mapping Plan is designed to encourage participants to
develop measurable goals for the activities set out in the Asset
Mapping exercise. Developing measurable goal statements before the
activity begins allows all participants to share in the success of
the activity.

Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder: Workshop For Child Care Practitioners (one day)
Description: This workshop includes description and definitions of Fetal
Alcohol Spectrum Disorder, effects of FASD on Native Communities,
a video, and group discussions about how FASD affects your
community, strategies for making a difference, and a review of the
asset mapping tool. Local resources are also discussed.

First Nations Family Child Care Course (14 days)
Description: This is an introductory course for First Nations people living on
Reserves who are interested in providing family child care.
This course emphasizes culturally and locally specific knowledge
and skills related to home-based child care. This course
will prepare people to apply for a community care facility under
the Provincial Child Care Licensing Regulation of the Community
Care and Assisted Living Act.

Traditional Parenting (27 hours in 9 modules)
Description: Facilitators of this workshop will provide support and guidance as
participants develop life skills and skills for supporting the
development of young children. Topics can include reflecting on
our past, healing, self care, interpersonal relationships, balance
and harmony, child development, storytelling, budgeting and
nutrition.

Enhancing Community Participation in Aboriginal Early Childhood Programs (half or full day)
Description: This workshop draws on a case study of a community based child care program. Participants will explore this case study and discuss strategies for involving community members in an ECE program. Participants will develop a poster that can be used to promote ECE in their community.

Caring for the Caregiver (up to 2 days)
Description: This workshop will cover issues such as: Learning styles and
strengths, Team and community building, Rebuilding positive trust
relationships, Dealing with fear, coping with anger, Expressing
feelings, Communicating with partners and children, Conflict
resolution, Interpersonal skills, Creating positive bonds &
support systems, Making positive choices, dealing with stress,
Understanding family system dynamics, Medicine Wheel and balance,
Building interdependency, Effects of addictive behaviours, Dealing
with destructive behaviour, Understanding your values and beliefs,
Importance of leisure activities.
